Kristopher C. Kern - Clinical Psychologist - Trauma, Grief/Loss, DEI

What is my approach to care?

Therapy is a Journey . . .
And a vulnerable one at that. You should trust the therapist you are opening up to which is why our therapeutic relationship is built on trust and empathy. This alliance encourages our collaboration in creating the healing space most aligned with your values. Think of therapy as riding a motorcycle with me in the sidecar. We journey toward healing on a road paved with an individualized treatment plan. You are the expert in your life;' together we will collaborate on an individualized plan consistent with your values in order to achieve change.
* My approach to therapy combines years of working with diverse communities in the Bay Area with an integrated therapeutic style applying best practices to meet your individual needs. My approach includes a mixture of Relational Therapy, Trauma Informed Care, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Emotion Focused Therapy where we can explore what concerns you the most.
* Each individual session becomes a place to explore and create a  new understanding of what brought you to therapy. It is a safe space to revisit or process a distressing time in your life without judgement.
* Allowing my own identities as a queer person of color encourages us to explore the interpersonal style that can cause distress. My role in therapy is to be flexible with you while also organizing our time. My job is to support your needs through skill building, to focus treatment on creating change, hold both all of us responsible, and gently challenge you to maximize your strengths.

"This is your healing journey filled with opportunities to be your authentic self."

Empathy & Compassion:
It is my intention at the beginning of therapy to focus on building our therapeutic relationship rooted in trust, empathy, and compassion. I then diligently work towards creating the healing space consistent with your values while engaging in culturally responsive interventions honoring your strengths and encouraging the growth you desire.

Professionalism:
Your care and perspective is at the forefront of decisions we make about treatment alongside prioritizing ethical standards such as confidentiality and privacy. Professionalism also means I'm keeping up to date on best practices and communicating with you in a timely manner.

Trustworthiness:
Transparency is important during this journey therefore I take the time to answer any questions you have or process concerns you raise. You should be informed about each step we take in treatment and it is my job to give you that reasoning.
